Last time, we talked about scale. Now, I would like to start to apply what I have been talking about to some actual models. I’ll start small, building single family dwellings in a trio of styles. Continue reading Residential Micropolis (part 1)

Scaling Micropolis
Building at small scales can be tricky. LEGO is a versatile building system, but elements can only get so small before they are too small to handle and interconnect. The smallest common element is a 1×1 plate which would be 7.5 feet across and 3 feet high in Micropolis (making it about 1:285). That is a grainy pixel!
Into the Micropolis Standard
Hopefully, I’ve wetted your appetite for designing little buildings. Before we begin, we have to talk about the rules. As AFOLs, we tend to sideline the instructions. If we build to them, it is often just to plunder them for techniques. Since the heart of Micropolis is the standard, there are rules that we have to follow in order to play well with other builders.
Why Micropolis
When I came out of my dark age a couple of years ago and started wading into the LEGO hobby as an AFOL, I was intimidated by the library of models that many of my fellow builders maintained. I had a fair number of elements, but they weren’t organized and they tended towards specialty pieces.
Green Spaces
I’m fascinated by Lego architecture, as a specific extension of my love of architecture in general. Building with bricks (mostly plates actually) lets me express those desires without the lengthy schooling that it would take to actually become an architect. This has me building Micropolis modules.
